FILMING A LIVE MUSIC VIDEO DURING INDUSTRY SHUT DOWN

“We love creating with Dante. The guy is a total pro who can adapt to challenging situations and capture the moment. The finished product is always killer.”

BRIEF

Crooked Coast wanted to create a live music event while venues were shut down due to Covid-19.  The concept doubled as an opportunity for a creative music video.

TEAM

Being mindful of limited space on the float, we decided to run a condensed team for this project.  We needed to give the band and lighting designer as much space as possible, and make sure no person or piece of equipment ended up in the ocean.  Our team consisted of a director/cinematographer on a separate chase boat moving around the band and through the crowd, a shooter on the float to focus on tighter shots, and an aerial pilot operating from a separate float in the harbor.

EXECUTION

One of the key factors of shooting a music video in real time is seamless communication among the team.  When shooting a live show in such a tight setting, there is the chance that shooters will end up being visible in another’s shot.  To ensure that one shooter wasn’t in the other shooter's frame, we used a strict shooting schedule.  However instead of checking the time, the band’s set-list was our tool for making sure we were on schedule. This meant that based on the song being played, every shooter and drone pilot knew where the other was going to be, and what kind of shots they were going to be getting (tight, medium, or wide.) This pre-planning allowed us to get every shot we needed, without interfering with someone else's.

RESULT

We created a music video and short documentary on the production of the event.  We also created a number of short form content for digital platforms.  Check out the video above for the final music video.  Crooked Coast was ecstatic with the final product and continues to be a regular client.
